The Heavy Lift
Galatians 6:2
PLAN OF THE DAY
A heavy load shared is a safer load. I will increase the capacity of my team by stepping in when demands get high.
READ GALATIANS 6:2
“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (NRSV)
The Heavy Lift
Accidents happen when the demands of the task — the weight, the complexity, the rush — exceed the capacity of the worker — their strength, their focus, their tools. When Paul tells us to bear one another’s burdens, he is giving us a divine instruction for increasing capacity. When you see a co-worker struggling and you step in to help, you are instantly changing the equation. You are adding strength to the system. You are turning a one-man risk into a two-man defense.
Fulfilling the law of Christ on a job site doesn’t require words. Sometimes, the holiest thing you can do is put your hand on the other end of a heavy pipe. By refusing to let your brother or sister struggle alone, you prevent the fatigue that leads to error and the frustration that leads to shortcuts.
God did not design us to carry the weight of the world — or the weight of the work — by ourselves. We are built for connection. Today, keep your head on a swivel. Look for the person who is struggling under the load and be the one who lightens it.
Faith in Action
Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today:
For the Laborer and Apprentice: Don’t Struggle in Silence
The Action: If a task is too heavy or awkward, do not try to be a hero. Hero mode is a major error trap. Ask for help.
The Witness: You allow others the blessing of helping you, creating a culture where mutual support is the norm, not the exception.
For the Journeyman: Intervene, Don’t Observe
The Action: If you see an apprentice struggling to position a piece of material, don’t wait for them to ask. Stop what you are doing and help.
The Witness: You model servanthood. You show that getting the job done never takes priority over the well-being of the person next to you.
For the Foreman: Resource the Load
The Action: Look at the tasks assigned for today. Are you asking one person to do a two-person job? Change the plan.
The Witness: You demonstrate justice and care. You show your crew that you understand the reality of their work and that you will not place a burden on them that is too heavy to bear.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You carried the ultimate burden for me so that I wouldn’t be crushed by it. Today, give me eyes to see the burdens of the people I work with. Take away the pride that makes me stand back and watch; give me the humility to step in and lift. Let my strength be a resource for others, and keep us all safe from the strain. Amen.
