The Full Armor
Ephesians 6:11
PLAN OF THE DAY
I will suit up for the battle and defend myself.
READ EPHESIANS 6:11
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (ESV)
The Full Armor
When Paul wrote this letter, he was likely looking at a Roman soldier. He saw a man covered from head to toe in metal and leather, designed for one purpose: to survive the strike of the enemy.
Paul uses this image to teach us about spiritual warfare. The principle applies perfectly to our work. You cannot fight a war in your pajamas, and you cannot build a skyscraper in shorts and flip-flops.
Our Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is our armor. The Helmet of Salvation protects the mind; the Hard Hat protects the brain. The Breastplate of Righteousness protects the heart; the High-Vis Vest ensures we are seen. The Shield of Faith extinguishes arrows; Safety Glasses deflect debris. The Shoes of Peace provide stability; Steel-Toed Boots provide traction and protection.
We complain about our armor. “It’s too hot.” “These glasses fog up.” “These gloves reduce my dexterity.” But the hazard — whether it is a spiritual attack or a flying shard of metal — does not care about your comfort.
The whole armor means you don’t pick and choose. You don’t wear the helmet but leave the breastplate at home. A soldier with a shield but no shoes will fall.
God values your life. He has provided spiritual defenses for your soul and gave us the wisdom to create physical defenses for your body. Respect the temple He created and suit up.
Faith in Action
Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today:
For the Laborer and Apprentice: Wear It Right
The Action: Check your hardhats expiration date. It’s on a sticker inside the hat or embossed in the material. Sun and age can damage its integrity.
The Witness: You show obedience to the standard. You are careful with the details.
For the Journeyman: Inspect the Armor
The Action: Look at your gloves, your harness, and your hat. Is the webbing frayed, gloves slick? If so, throw them away and get a replacement.
The Witness: You show wisdom. Don’t gamble with flaws in your equipment.
For the Foreman: Model the Standard
The Action: Model the behavior you want from your team. Show the proper way to suit up.
The Witness: You reflect integrity. Be the example.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my Shield and my Defender. Forgive me for the times I have been too lazy or too proud to wear the protection I need. Help me to take standing against the enemy seriously. Whether it is the armor of God for my spirit or the PPE for my body, help me to put it on and keep it on. Amen.
