PLAN OF THE DAY
For safe work, efficiency, and personal pride, I will take care of my tools and my work area.
READ 1 CORINTHIANS 14:40
“But all things should be done decently and in order.” (ESV)
All Things in Order
Paul wrote this verse to a church struggling with chaos and confusion. He reminded them that God is the God of peace, not confusion. That same principle applies to our work.
How hard is it to find a ¾” socket when all your sockets are in a heap in the bottom of a toolbox? How many folks have slipped or rolled an ankle because of scrap on the ground? What does an orderly work area say about you and your team?
Scripture and experience tell us that order is a foundation for work done well. In Lean Manufacturing and Construction it’s called 5S – Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain. A work area that is set in order is efficient. Maintaining a standard setup, even on a constantly changing jobsite, reduces complexity and improves efficiency. Just as importantly, it reinforces pride in your work and your team.
To work decently and in order means we stage our materials before we start. It means we run our cords in straight lines. It means we clean as we go. You get what you tolerate. When you insist on an orderly worksite, you are putting scripture into practice and building a foundation of faith in your work.
Faith in Action
Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today:
For the Laborer and Apprentice: Clean As You Go
The Action: Don’t wait for the end of the shift. If you cut a piece of pipe, pick up the cutoff immediately. If you unspool some wire, throw away the packaging.
The Witness: You show diligence and discipline to finish the small tasks, not just the big ones.
For the Journeyman: Manage the Cord Chaos
The Action: Look at your extension cords and welding leads. Are they a tangled web? Take 5 minutes to route them properly, secure them or hang them up.
The Witness: You show consideration. You are making sure that the person walking behind you doesn’t fall because of your inattention.
For the Foreman: Reset the Work Area
The Action: Before your crew breaks for lunch, dedicate time to cleanup and organization. Reset the work area so the afternoon work starts right.
The Witness: You set the standard. You are sending your crew to work safely and with pride in their work.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for being content with chaos. Remind me that You created the universe with order and precision. Help me to reflect Your character by keeping my site clean, my tools organized, and my path clear. Amen.
