I will ask questions without fear today, building my capacity to work safely and master the craft.

Read Proverbs 1:5

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” (ESV)

The New Guy

Your first day on a heavy construction site is overwhelming. The noise, the scale of the equipment, the fast pace, and the terminology can feel like an entirely foreign language. When you are the green hand — the new worker — the greatest temptation is to just nod your head when the foreman gives instructions, pretending you understand when you actually have no idea what they just said.

Pretending to know what you are doing is the fastest way to get yourself or someone else killed.

The gap between a novice and an expert is a high-risk zone. If a new worker operates on guesswork, they are introducing massive, unpredictable variables into the team. We work safely by eliminating the fear of asking questions. The safest, most valuable thing a new hire can say is, “I don’t know how to do this. Can you show me?”

Proverbs tells us that a truly wise person is not someone who already knows everything; a wise person is someone who is eager to hear and increase in learning. Wisdom starts with the humility to be a beginner.

This is the exact same posture we must take with God. We often try to approach Him acting like we have our lives completely figured out. We try to hide our confusion and our failures. God cannot fill a cup that is already full of pride. You have to admit you need His guidance before He can teach you how to build your life.

Don’t fake it today. Ask the question. Be willing to be the student, and let the Master Builder guide your hands.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: The Power of “I Don’t Know”

The Action: If you are handed a tool you have never used, or given a task you don’t fully understand, stop. Look your teammate in the eye and say, “This is my first time doing this. Walk me through it.”

The Witness: You show secure identity. You prove that your ego is not tied to knowing everything, which makes you a highly trustworthy worker.

For the Journeyman: Remember Your First Day

The Action: When your new teammate asks a question that seems obvious, do not roll your eyes or dismiss them. Answer it clearly and explain the why behind the what.

The Witness: You model the patience of Christ. You are freely giving the grace and instruction that was once given to you.

For the Foreman: Verify the Nod

The Action: When you give a rookie an assignment, do not end with “Makes sense?” — they will always say yes. Instead say, “Alright, repeat back to me what you’re going to do first.”

The Witness: You lead with a shepherd’s mindset. You are actively protecting the newest and most vulnerable member of your team from the dangers they cannot yet see.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that my pride often keeps me from asking for help. On this site, and in my life, give me the humility of an apprentice. Deliver me from the dangerous trap of pretending I know more than I do. Give me the courage to ask questions. Keep my heart open to Your guidance and instruction every single day. Amen.

Thanks for reading The Master Builder’s Foundation! We often pretend this verse isn’t true.

We act as if the good worker is the one who never makes a mistake. We treat error like a character flaw. If someone messes up, we say, “They were careless.”

The Bible tells us the truth: to err is human. Falling short is literally what happens when we aim for a target and miss. We aim to wire the panel correctly, but we swap the leads. We aim to secure the load, but we miss a strap. We aim to remember the procedure, but we forget step three.

If your safety plan relies on you being perfect 100% of the time, your safety plan is broken. You will fall short. You will have a bad day.

Because all have fallen short, we need Grace spiritually and Defenses physically. We wear fall protection not because we plan to fall, but because we know we might. We install guards on saws not because we are stupid, but because we are human.

Admitting you are imperfect isn’t weakness; it’s the first step to being safe. The most dangerous person on site is the one who thinks they are too good to make a mistake.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Own Your Miss

The Action: If you make a mistake — even a small one — don’t hide it. I will build capacity today — in my faith and in my work.

Read 1 Corinthians 3:10

“According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it.”

The Gap Between the Print and the Pour

We understand the difference between “Work as Imagined” — the prints, the plan, the expectations — and “Work as Done” — reality. The plan assumes perfect weather, on-time materials, and the right mindset and experience for the task. Reality involves mud, delays, disruption, and change.

God doesn’t expect us to be robots following a perfect procedure. He created us with minds to assess risk and hands to build resilience. We know that people are the solution, not the problem. When things go wrong, the easy path is to blame the worker. The Master Builder looks at the system.

Spiritual and operational excellence isn’t the absence of problems; it is the presence of capacity. It is the ability to fail safely, having enough margin in our rigging and grace in our hearts to identify, speak to, and manage the unexpected.

Today, trust your training. Look out for the drift in standards. Make the adjustments that keep the crew safe.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Practice “Loud” Humility

The Action: Ask for help immediately if unsure. Admit mistakes instantly.

The Witness: “Bad news doesn’t get better with age.” By speaking up, you allow the team to learn before an error becomes a tragedy. You show that you value truth and safety more than pride.

For the Journeyman: Fix the System, Don’t Blame the Person

The Action: If an apprentice is struggling with an awkward task, stop and help adjust the setup. Teaching is a gift.

The Witness: Demonstrate love by physically lightening a burden. You build defense into the system, removing traps for those walking behind you.

For the Foreman: Respond with Grace, Not Anger

The Action: When things go wrong, assume good faith. Ask: “What did you need that you didn’t have? Where did we trap you?”

The Witness: You shift from punishment to repair. You become a safe harbor in a high-stress environment, building deep trust and capacity for safe work.

Prayer

Master Builder, thank You for the skill in my hands. When the plans don’t match reality, grant me the wisdom to pause and assess. Help me be a builder of capacity — someone who makes the job safer for the person working next to me. I will not let familiarity rob me of my fear.

Read Proverbs 4:23

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (ESV)

Stuff That Can Kill You

In Human and Organizational Performance we use a blunt, unvarnished term for the most dangerous hazards on a job site.

STKY…. “Sticky”….Stuff That Can Kill You.

Not significant hazard. Not elevated risk priority. Stuff. That. Can. Kill. You.

The language is intentional. It cuts through the bureaucratic fog that makes danger feel abstract and distant. Electricity is STKY. A suspended load is STKY. A trench without shoring is STKY. Stored pressure in a line you are about to break is STKY. When you call something by its true name you give it the respect it deserves.

The most dangerous moment on any job site is not when people are afraid. It is when people are comfortable.

The veteran electrician who has terminated a thousand breakers without incident. The pipefitter who has broken a thousand flanges without a surprise. Familiarity breeds a quiet, creeping blindness. The voltage does not care how many years you have been doing it. Gravity has never once taken a day off.

King Solomon understood this. He wrote keep your heart with all vigilance — the word translated vigilance here carries the image of a guarded fortress, a place of strict, constant watchfulness. Solomon wasn’t describing occasional caution. He was describing a posture. A permanent, wide-awake awareness of what flows in and what flows out.

The springs of life flow from the heart. STKY flows from a job site where workers have stopped guarding their awareness. Every time you approach the thing that can end your life, approach it the same way you did the first time. With your eyes wide open. Your checklist in hand. The full understanding that today is not guaranteed.

Name the STKY in your work area today. Say it out loud. Make your crew say it out loud. When you name it you see it. When you stop naming it you stop seeing it.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this in your work today.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Name It Before You Touch It

The Action: Before starting any task near a significant hazard, say out loud to your partner: “The STKY here is ___. If it activates, here is what happens and here is where I need to be.”

The Witness: You are refusing to let familiarity make you blind. Naming the hazard is an act of respect for your own life and for the lives of the crew around you.

For the Journeyman: Teach the Fear

The Action: When orienting a new worker to a task, don’t just show them the steps. Stop and say, “Before we do anything, let me show you what in this area can kill you and why.”

The Witness: You are transferring life-saving awareness. The healthy fear of a real hazard is one of the most valuable things a veteran can give to someone just starting out.

For the Foreman: Build the STKY Review Into the Briefing

The Action: Make the identification of STKY items a required, named part of every pre-job brief and JSA. Ask your crew: “What is in this work area that can end someone’s life today? What are our defenses against each one?”

The Witness: You are engineering vigilance into the system. You ensure that no one walks into the work area without having named the thing that demands their full respect.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I sometimes let experience make me careless. The things that can take my life are real and they do not respect my confidence. Guard my heart with vigilance today. Keep me awake to the dangers I know so well that I have stopped truly seeing them. Let me approach every hazard as if it is the first time. Protect me and my crew from the blindness of familiarity. Amen.

Subscribe to The Master Builder’s Foundation
