I will build my capacity for safety and for God’s wisdom by hearing the truth first.

READ PROVERBS 18:13

“If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.” (ESV)

Work as Imagined vs. Work as Done

There is often a gap between the office and the job site. It is the difference between Work as Imagined — how the planners and engineers think the job will go — and Work as Done — how it actually happens in the mud, rain, and tight spaces.

Proverbs tells us that giving an answer before hearing the whole story is foolish. Yet how often do we see a safety plan or new policy roll out that makes no sense for the team turning the wrenches?

A foundational goal of Human and Organizational Performance is to build capacity for safe work. We don’t punish failure; we build a system strong enough to fail safely. You cannot build capacity on a job site if you don’t understand the reality of what your team is facing. You have to ask: What makes this job difficult? Why did that shortcut make sense at the time?

This same principle applies to our spiritual lives. Building capacity to understand God’s work in our lives is the key to a closer relationship with Him. We rush to God with our own answers — telling Him exactly how He should fix our problems, our finances, or our families. We do all the talking. We fail to listen.

To build spiritual capacity, we must stop and hear what God is doing in our reality. We must listen to His Word and His Spirit before we assume we know the plan. Whether you are leading a crew or following the Lord, listening is the foundation of building capacity that lasts.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today:

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Speak the Reality

The Action: When a foreman asks why a task is taking so long, don’t make excuses. Explain the barrier. “The print says to run the pipe here, but there’s an HVAC duct in the way that isn’t on the drawing.”

The Witness: You show honesty and problem-solving skills rather than hiding mistakes out of fear. You are helping the team close the gap between Work as Imagined and Work as Done.

For the Journeyman: Ask Why, Not Who

The Action: When an apprentice makes a mistake, ask, “What made it make sense to do it that way?”

The Witness: You model patience. You investigate the root cause with grace instead of jumping straight to condemnation. You encourage speaking up. You might discover they were given the wrong tool or bad instructions.

For the Foreman: Walk the Line

The Action: Do not write a Job Safety Analysis or work plan from the trailer. Go walk the ground where the work will happen with the people who will be doing the work.

The Witness: You show humility. You acknowledge that the people with the boots on the ground often see things the clipboard misses.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I have spoken too quickly and listened too little. I want to build a greater capacity to understand Your work in my life, but I know that requires me to be quiet and hear Your voice. Give me the patience to understand the reality of the work before I judge it or try to fix it. Make me a leader and a follower who listens first. Amen.

Thanks for reading! When we are dealing with high voltage, pressurized lines, or suspended loads, we don’t have the luxury of guessing.

Jesus’ command to let our Yes be Yes is often taught as a lesson against lying or swearing oaths. But on the job site, it is the foundation of Operational Discipline. It means that our words must match reality.

We talk about Critical Steps — those moments where, if you get it wrong, there is no recovery. A Lockout/Tagout verification is a critical step. When a mechanic asks, “Is that breaker locked out?” and you answer “Yes,” you are issuing a guarantee that lives depend on. If you say “Yes” because you assume it’s done, or because you don’t want to look slow, you are introducing a failure into the system.

The Evil One, as the verse says, thrives in confusion and half-truths. A job site that runs on God’s principles runs on clarity. A No is just as valuable as a Yes. Saying “No, I haven’t checked that yet” or “No, I don’t understand the plan” requires courage, but it stops the job long enough to make it safe.

Strip the maybe out of your vocabulary. If you haven’t put your eyes on it, the answer is “I don’t know — let’s go look.” Let your communication be as solid as the concrete you pour.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. People used them as living spaces in the cool of the evening. Because people were up there constantly, the risk of falling was high. God didn’t say, “Be careful.” God commanded a Parapet — a physical wall or guardrail.

We use the Hierarchy of Controls to keep our work safe. At the bottom is Behavior — telling people to watch out. At the top is Design — creating the capacity to fail safely by physically removing or mitigating the hazard. God is the great designer. He knows that human beings trip, get dizzy, and get distracted. He knows that gravity is undefeated. He demands a physical solution to a fatal hazard.

If you are working near a leading edge, a hole, or a trench, you cannot rely on your balance to save you. You need a parapet — a guardrail, a hole cover, or a fall protection system.

God takes safety personally. He views the failure to provide protection as a moral failure.

Don’t trust your agility. Build guardrails.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today:

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Respect the Tape

The Action: Never duck under barricade tape without permission. If you see a hole cover that has slid out of place, fix it immediately.

The Witness: You show discipline. You value the rules designed to provide protection.

For the Journeyman: Tape is Not a Wall

The Action: If you are working near a drop-off or leading edge, install a hard rail or tie off. Don’t just rely on barricade tape.

The Witness: You show that you care about results. You are preventing the fall, not just pointing out the hazard.

For the Foreman: Check the Edges

The Action: Start your morning walk by checking the perimeter. Are the top rails fixed? Are the toe boards installed? Are the floor openings covered and cleated?

The Witness: You reflect God’s concern for life. You are protecting your crew by taking the time to physically verify the parapet is in place.

Prayer

Lord, You value our lives so much that You gave us instructions on how to build our roofs. Forgive me for the times I have skipped placing safety barriers because it was too much work. Help me to see that a guardrail is an act of love for my neighbor. Give me the diligence to build the parapet for the benefit of myself and others. The prudent worker is not psychic; they are observant. They are constantly scanning the future. They ask, “If a hose blows, where does the fluid go? If this load shifts, where does it fall?” Anticipation is the key to failing safely or avoiding failure altogether.

The simple worker operates on hope. They assume the site is the same as it was an hour ago. They walk past the warning tape without looking up. In this story, Elisha’s servant walks out in the morning and sees only one thing: the enemy army surrounding them. He panics. He sees the threat, but he is blind to the reality of the situation. Elisha sees the full picture. He prays a simple, powerful prayer: “Lord, open his eyes.”

We talk about Hazard Recognition — the ability to look at a work area and see what others miss. A blind worker sees a crane making a lift; a teammate with open eyes sees the swing radius, the pinch point, and the load path.

We often operate like the servant — focused on the pressure of the job and blind to the invisible energies around us like gravity, electricity, or pressure.

We need to pray Elisha’s prayer every morning before we step out of the truck: “Lord, open my eyes.” Help me see the hazards. Help me see the defenses that You have provided.

God gave us the gift of sight, use it. Don’t walk through your day with tunnel vision. He prowls. The hazards he creates for us are the same.

Our greatest enemy isn’t the complex, high-risk task like a heavy lift that has everyone’s attention. It is complacency. It is the silent confidence that says, “I’ve done this a thousand times. I don’t need the checklist. I don’t need to tie off for just five steps.”

As we get better at our jobs, our brains drift into autopilot. We stop seeing the risk because we are used to it. That moment of drift is when the lion strikes.

The command to be sober-minded isn’t about drugs or alcohol (though that works too). It means to be serious and clear-headed. It means waking up from the daydream of the routine. I will return to the benchmark.

READ ISAIAH 28:16-17

“Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: Whoever believes will not be in haste. And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line.” (ESV)

The Benchmark

When you are setting forms for a foundation, your eyes will lie to you.

The ground might have a slight slope, the surrounding buildings might have settled, and the trench might look perfectly flat. If you eyeball the elevation, you will pour a crooked slab. To get it right, you set up an auto level or a laser level. But even the instrument isn’t enough; you have to shoot your elevation back to a Benchmark — a fixed, absolute, unchanging point of reference.

If you measure your forms off yesterday’s mistake instead of the benchmark, the error compounds. A foundation that is out of level by half an inch at the bottom will throw the steel framing out of plumb by inches at the roofline. It’s the Normalization of Deviance — we accept a small error today, and tomorrow that error becomes our new baseline.

God tells us through Isaiah that He has laid a tested, sure foundation, and He uses His own justice and righteousness as the measuring line. In our spiritual lives, we often try to “eyeball it”. We look at the culture, or at other people, and think, “I look pretty level compared to them.” But other people are not the benchmark.

Look through the lens of God’s Word and shoot your elevation back to His absolute standard. When we align our lives with His benchmark, we build a spiritual foundation that will hold up under the heaviest loads.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today:

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Do Not Eyeball It

The Action: When setting formwork, grading dirt, or establishing a layout line, take the extra two minutes to pull the tape or check the rod against the laser.

The Witness: You show a commitment to truth. You demonstrate that you care about the integrity of what you are building.

For the Journeyman: Protect the Benchmark

The Action: Know exactly where the surveyor’s benchmark or the control point is on your site. Protect it. Do not let trucks run over it, and do not let material get stacked on it.

The Witness: You understand that without a protected, unchanging standard, the crew and you are just guessing.

For the Foreman: Calibrate Your Leadership

The Action: An auto level that has been dropped will shoot a crooked line. Send your instruments in for regular calibration. More importantly, calibrate yourself — ask a mentor or trusted peer to evaluate your leadership.

The Witness: You model humility. You admit that you are susceptible to drift, and you intentionally seek out the plumb line to correct your course.

Prayer

Lord, You are the sure foundation and the absolute standard of truth. I confess that I often trust my own eyes and feelings instead of Your Word. Forgive me for measuring my life against the world instead of against Your benchmark. We think that pushing our bodies to the breaking point proves something.

God calls this vanity.

The Psalmist warns against the “bread of anxious toil.” This is the work you do when you are running on fumes, driven by the fear that if you stop, everything will fall apart. I will ask questions without fear today, building my capacity to work safely and master the craft.

Read Proverbs 1:5

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” (ESV)

The New Guy

Your first day on a heavy construction site is overwhelming. The noise, the scale of the equipment, the fast pace, and the terminology can feel like an entirely foreign language. When you are the green hand — the new worker — the greatest temptation is to just nod your head when the foreman gives instructions, pretending you understand when you actually have no idea what they just said.

Pretending to know what you are doing is the fastest way to get yourself or someone else killed.

The gap between a novice and an expert is a high-risk zone. If a new worker operates on guesswork, they are introducing massive, unpredictable variables into the team. We work safely by eliminating the fear of asking questions. The safest, most valuable thing a new hire can say is, “I don’t know how to do this. Can you show me?”

Proverbs tells us that a truly wise person is not someone who already knows everything; a wise person is someone who is eager to hear and increase in learning. Wisdom starts with the humility to be a beginner.

This is the exact same posture we must take with God. We often try to approach Him acting like we have our lives completely figured out. We try to hide our confusion and our failures. God cannot fill a cup that is already full of pride. You have to admit you need His guidance before He can teach you how to build your life.

Don’t fake it today. Ask the question. Be willing to be the student, and let the Master Builder guide your hands.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: The Power of “I Don’t Know”

The Action: If you are handed a tool you have never used, or given a task you don’t fully understand, stop. Look your teammate in the eye and say, “This is my first time doing this. Walk me through it.”

The Witness: You show secure identity. You prove that your ego is not tied to knowing everything, which makes you a highly trustworthy worker.

For the Journeyman: Remember Your First Day

The Action: When your new teammate asks a question that seems obvious, do not roll your eyes or dismiss them. Answer it clearly and explain the why behind the what.

The Witness: You model the patience of Christ. You are freely giving the grace and instruction that was once given to you.

For the Foreman: Verify the Nod

The Action: When you give a rookie an assignment, do not end with “Makes sense?” — they will always say yes. Instead say, “Alright, repeat back to me what you’re going to do first.”

The Witness: You lead with a shepherd’s mindset. You are actively protecting the newest and most vulnerable member of your team from the dangers they cannot yet see.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that my pride often keeps me from asking for help. On this site, and in my life, give me the humility of an apprentice. Deliver me from the dangerous trap of pretending I know more than I do. Give me the courage to ask questions. Keep my heart open to Your guidance and instruction every single day. Amen.

Thanks for reading The Master Builder’s Foundation! We often pretend this verse isn’t true.

We act as if the good worker is the one who never makes a mistake. We treat error like a character flaw. If someone messes up, we say, “They were careless.”

The Bible tells us the truth: to err is human. Falling short is literally what happens when we aim for a target and miss. We aim to wire the panel correctly, but we swap the leads. We aim to secure the load, but we miss a strap. We aim to remember the procedure, but we forget step three.

If your safety plan relies on you being perfect 100% of the time, your safety plan is broken. You will fall short. You will have a bad day.

Because all have fallen short, we need Grace spiritually and Defenses physically. We wear fall protection not because we plan to fall, but because we know we might. We install guards on saws not because we are stupid, but because we are human.

Admitting you are imperfect isn’t weakness; it’s the first step to being safe. The most dangerous person on site is the one who thinks they are too good to make a mistake.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. You show that you care more about the truth than your ego.

For the Journeyman: Anticipate the Fall

The Action: When you set up a job, ask: “If this messes up, where does it go wrong? what happens?” Build a defense for that.

The Witness: You model the Father’s heart. You are protecting the vulnerable rather than just expecting them to be strong.

For the Foreman: Don’t Shoot the Messenger

The Action: When someone reports a mistake, say “Thank you for telling me.” Take action and use grace as a learning moment.

The Witness: You reflect the Gospel. I will build capacity today — in my faith and in my work.

Read 1 Corinthians 3:10

“According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it.”

The Gap Between the Print and the Pour

We understand the difference between “Work as Imagined” — the prints, the plan, the expectations — and “Work as Done” — reality. The plan assumes perfect weather, on-time materials, and the right mindset and experience for the task. Reality involves mud, delays, disruption, and change.

God doesn’t expect us to be robots following a perfect procedure. He created us with minds to assess risk and hands to build resilience. We know that people are the solution, not the problem. When things go wrong, the easy path is to blame the worker. The Master Builder looks at the system.

Spiritual and operational excellence isn’t the absence of problems; it is the presence of capacity. It is the ability to fail safely, having enough margin in our rigging and grace in our hearts to identify, speak to, and manage the unexpected.

Today, trust your training. Look out for the drift in standards. Make the adjustments that keep the crew safe.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this devotional today.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Practice “Loud” Humility

The Action: Ask for help immediately if unsure. Admit mistakes instantly.

The Witness: “Bad news doesn’t get better with age.” By speaking up, you allow the team to learn before an error becomes a tragedy. You show that you value truth and safety more than pride.

For the Journeyman: Fix the System, Don’t Blame the Person

The Action: If an apprentice is struggling with an awkward task, stop and help adjust the setup. Teaching is a gift.

The Witness: Demonstrate love by physically lightening a burden. You build defense into the system, removing traps for those walking behind you.

For the Foreman: Respond with Grace, Not Anger

The Action: When things go wrong, assume good faith. Ask: “What did you need that you didn’t have? Where did we trap you?”

The Witness: You shift from punishment to repair. You become a safe harbor in a high-stress environment, building deep trust and capacity for safe work.

Prayer

Master Builder, thank You for the skill in my hands. When the plans don’t match reality, grant me the wisdom to pause and assess. Help me be a builder of capacity — someone who makes the job safer for the person working next to me. I will not let familiarity rob me of my fear.

Read Proverbs 4:23

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (ESV)

Stuff That Can Kill You

In Human and Organizational Performance we use a blunt, unvarnished term for the most dangerous hazards on a job site.

STKY…. “Sticky”….Stuff That Can Kill You.

Not significant hazard. Not elevated risk priority. Stuff. That. Can. Kill. You.

The language is intentional. It cuts through the bureaucratic fog that makes danger feel abstract and distant. Electricity is STKY. A suspended load is STKY. A trench without shoring is STKY. Stored pressure in a line you are about to break is STKY. When you call something by its true name you give it the respect it deserves.

The most dangerous moment on any job site is not when people are afraid. It is when people are comfortable.

The veteran electrician who has terminated a thousand breakers without incident. The pipefitter who has broken a thousand flanges without a surprise. Familiarity breeds a quiet, creeping blindness. The voltage does not care how many years you have been doing it. Gravity has never once taken a day off.

King Solomon understood this. He wrote keep your heart with all vigilance — the word translated vigilance here carries the image of a guarded fortress, a place of strict, constant watchfulness. Solomon wasn’t describing occasional caution. He was describing a posture. A permanent, wide-awake awareness of what flows in and what flows out.

The springs of life flow from the heart. STKY flows from a job site where workers have stopped guarding their awareness. Every time you approach the thing that can end your life, approach it the same way you did the first time. With your eyes wide open. Your checklist in hand. The full understanding that today is not guaranteed.

Name the STKY in your work area today. Say it out loud. Make your crew say it out loud. When you name it you see it. When you stop naming it you stop seeing it.

Faith in Action

Witnessing through our work means living these principles where we stand. Here is how you can apply this in your work today.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Name It Before You Touch It

The Action: Before starting any task near a significant hazard, say out loud to your partner: “The STKY here is ___. If it activates, here is what happens and here is where I need to be.”

The Witness: You are refusing to let familiarity make you blind. Naming the hazard is an act of respect for your own life and for the lives of the crew around you.

For the Journeyman: Teach the Fear

The Action: When orienting a new worker to a task, don’t just show them the steps. Stop and say, “Before we do anything, let me show you what in this area can kill you and why.”

The Witness: You are transferring life-saving awareness. The healthy fear of a real hazard is one of the most valuable things a veteran can give to someone just starting out.

For the Foreman: Build the STKY Review Into the Briefing

The Action: Make the identification of STKY items a required, named part of every pre-job brief and JSA. Ask your crew: “What is in this work area that can end someone’s life today? What are our defenses against each one?”

The Witness: You are engineering vigilance into the system. You ensure that no one walks into the work area without having named the thing that demands their full respect.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I sometimes let experience make me careless. The things that can take my life are real and they do not respect my confidence. Guard my heart with vigilance today. Keep me awake to the dangers I know so well that I have stopped truly seeing them. Let me approach every hazard as if it is the first time. Protect me and my crew from the blindness of familiarity.
