The Green Tag

When you walk out onto a platform fifty feet in the air, you are betting your life on the work of the scaffold builders — men and women you might not even know. You are trusting that they leveled the bases, locked every pin, and secured every cross-brace.

We communicate that trust through the tagging system. A green tag signed by a competent person means the scaffold has been inspected and is safe for use.

But a green tag doesn’t mean you stop paying attention. Before you climb, you look. Are the base plates properly supported? Are the braces in place? Has another trade removed something to route a pipe or make room for their work?

We trust, but verify.

Our faith has a similar structure. It is built on a foundation laid by others — the apostles, the prophets, and generations of faithful believers who came before us.

Sometimes we over rely on the work of others. We rely on the faith of our spouse, the prayers of our parents, the teaching of our pastor, or what we learned growing up.

Those people may have helped build the scaffold. Be grateful for them. You cannot survive the high-pressure storms of life standing on borrowed faith.

At some point, you verify the work and it becomes your own. You have to know what you believe and why you believe it. Thank God for the people who helped build your faith. Then check your own connection to the Rock.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Read the Tag

The Action: Before you load a scaffold with material, read the green tag. Make sure it is current and properly signed. Look at the scaffold yourself. If something doesn’t look right, don’t climb until you understand why.

The Witness: Respect the work of those who came before you, but take responsibility for your own safety.

For the Journeyman: Respect the Structure

The Action: If the scaffold interferes with your work, don’t remove a brace, tube, or component yourself. Get the scaffold team involved. Make sure any modification is properly inspected and the tag updated before the scaffold goes back into service.

The Witness: Your work affects people you may never meet. A craftsman leaves behind work that others can trust and verify.

For the Foreman: Defend the Builders’ Work

The Action: If you see someone altering a scaffold without authorization, stop the work. Pull the green tag and get the competent person involved before anyone climbs again.

The Witness: Build a culture where a green tag means something. Protect the standards that allow people to trust and work together.

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for the men and women who build the platforms I work on and for the faithful believers who built the foundation of my faith. Christ, You are my Cornerstone. Forgive me for the times I have coasted on the faith of others instead of pursuing You myself. Give me the wisdom to examine what I am standing on — in my work and in my faith — and the courage to act when something isn’t right. Amen.

Hurry Up

The pressure to produce is constant. The schedule is tight, the budget is thin, and the weather is closing in. The natural reaction is to speed up; to walk faster, work faster, and drive faster.

King Solomon warns us: whoever makes haste will miss his way. Time pressure is an enormous Error Trap. When we rush, our attention narrows. We stop scanning for hazards. We skip checks. We take shortcuts we wouldn’t normally take.

God is not hurried. He works with deliberate purpose. He calls us to be diligent but not frantic. True efficiency comes from smooth, deliberate action. It’s about doing it right the first time so you don’t have to do it again or heal from it later.

The best crews aren’t slow. They are smooth. They know what they’re doing, they work with purpose, and they don’t let urgency turn into hurry.

The Action: Walk with purpose, but do not run. Resist the pressure to rush.

The Action: When teaching a teammate your craft, praise complete and accurate work.

The Witness: You show respect for the craft. Speed comes with competence and repetition.

For the Foreman: Resist the “ASAP” mentality

The Action: Speak up when a supervisor or client tells you they need the work done ASAP. Instead, give a specific, realistic time: “If you can get us the revised material, we will be done by 2PM”

The Witness: You avoid the error trap of unrealistic pressure. By speaking up, you protect your team from the mistakes that come from unrealistic goals and the pressure of the moment.

Prayer

Lord, forgive me when I let pressure override my better judgment. When I rush, I am not trusting You; I am just reacting. Steady me so I work with a safe and efficient rhythm. Grant me the courage to pause when the pressure mounts, so that I do not miss my way. Amen.

“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” (ESV)

Frustration

You just finished hanging a difficult spool and it doesn’t flange up. The engineer jumps all over the foreman about the quality of his work. Turns out the drawing was revised during fabrication. The engineer walks off embarrassed and mad. The crew is left hanging and the work isn’t done.

James gives us the foundation for communication: two ears, one mouth. We should use them proportionally. When things go wrong, we often flip that ratio. What if the engineer took ownership, parked their frustration, listened to the crew and sought out the condition causing the mismatch? Rework would be required but trust would be built. The work would be done safely and correctly. The lesson would be learned and future problems avoided.

To perform like a Master Builder, you must recognize and manage your mindset. Acknowledge your frustration. Stop to listen. That’s how you do good work and find the righteousness James talks about.

The Action: Be slow to speak and quick to hear. Prove you heard your task by repeating it back. Listen, repeat, confirm.

The Witness: You model active listening. You demonstrate the ability to be trusted and the capacity to advance in the ranks.

For the Journeyman: Count to Five

The Action: When a helper makes a mistake or a tool breaks, count to five before you say anything.

The Witness: Use this shortcut to demonstrate to your team how to stay focused when things go wrong. It’s a hard lesson but one a craftsman has to learn to be part of a high performing team.

For the Foreman: Listen, don’t reload

The Action: When the team asks a question, take the time to listen. Don’t form the answer in your head while they are talking. Listen, don’t reload.

The Witness: Positive mindset starts with you. It is the foundation of leadership. By actively listening, you lower the cost of speaking up and build trust with your team.

Prayer

Father, help me manage emotions. Anger creates more problems than it solves. Give me the discipline to pause and listen before I react. Help me to create an atmosphere around me where truth can be spoken without fear. Let my words build up and protect, rather than tear down. Amen.

Learning Together

A Learning Team is a deliberate, structured conversation held after a safety event. The purpose is to learn and make improvements to work processes and systems to avoid future failure. A learning team seeks to understand what the system looked like from inside the work. The questions focus on the crew who was there: Walk me through your day. What did you know? What tools did you have? What did the task look like from where you were standing? What would have had to be different for this not to happen? It requires trust.

This is what Solomon describes in Proverbs. Without counsel, plans will fail again. With the electrician, the pipefitter the laborer, the foreman, and the helpers working together to tell their story and leadership focused on listening and action, we can learn and get better. Through the learning team, we find the gap between Work as Imagined and Work as Done. And we close it.

After the resurrection, Jesus did not hold a debrief to discipline the disciples for their failures. He gathered them. He walked with them. He asked them questions. He drew the story out of them and used it to restore, redirect, and recommission. That is the spirit of a Learning Team, a conversation not a courtroom.

The next incident is already being built, right now, by the systems and conditions on your site. The only way to avoid future failure is to understand and learn from our experience. Gather your team. Ask the real questions. Listen without blame. Build something better.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Tell the Whole Story

The Action: If you’re part of a Learning Team, tell everything — even the parts that make you look bad. “I skipped the last step because we were running late and thought it would be fine.” That’s the whole point.

The Witness: Your honesty gives your organization the information it needs to protect the next person. Few things you offer at work matter more.

For the Journeyman: Ask, Don’t Accuse

The Action: In a debrief, replace “Why did you do it that way?” with “What did the situation look like to you at the time?” When it’s your turn to speak, tell the whole story too. That is the same standard you’re asking of others.

The Witness: You lead by example. Your questions show the crew what we are working together to build understanding.

For the Foreman: Call the Meeting Before the Report

The Action: When an event occurs, gather the crew who was involved. Sit down together. Ask them to walk you through the day from the beginning. Write what they tell you, listen carefully.

The Witness: You reflect the wisdom of Solomon: counsel first, assumption never. An organization that learns is an organization that protects its people.

Prayer

Lord, give me the humility to learn from what goes wrong. Forgive me for the times I have looked for someone to blame rather than something to understand. Grant me the wisdom to gather the people who hold the pieces of the story and the patience to listen until the full picture becomes clear. Amen.

Iron Sharpens Iron

Over time, we get dull. Dull is dangerous. Force a dull tool and something bad usually follows.

Dull looks like drift. We skip the tie-off because it takes too long. We stop wearing safety glasses because they fog up. The standard slips and nobody says anything.

The only way back is friction – iron sharpening iron. On our team, that means speaking up. It’s constructive criticism. It’s a peer check before a critical lift. It’s a reminder to do the right thing the right way. It can sting a little but makes us better.

We hold each other accountable to stay sharp. One person sharpening another.

The Action: Don’t wait to be corrected. Go to a journeyman and ask, “Can you watch me do this and tell me if there’s a safer or better way?”

For the Journeyman: Provide the Friction

The Action: If you see a peer taking a shortcut, don’t walk past it. Speak up.

The Witness: You show that you are committed to the standard. You are willing to risk an awkward conversation to help a team member.

For the Foreman: Praise the Sparks

The Action: When you see two workers correcting each other or discussing the safest way to do a task, publicly praise them for it.

The Witness: You lead like a Master Builder. You create an environment where speaking up is valued and where iron sharpens iron.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I don’t always like being told I am doing something wrong. Give me the humility to recognize when I have become dull and complacent. Thank You for the brothers and sisters on my crew who care enough to correct me. Give me the courage to be the iron that sharpens them today. Amen.

Hidden Voids

When concrete is poured into a form, it traps air. If that air isn’t removed, it creates pockets of empty space called voids. If you break open a bit of concrete and see a series of voids, that is called honeycombing. There is procedure used when pouring concrete to avoid honeycombing. We use a concrete vibrator or stinger. The stinger is dropped into the freshly poured concrete and thrust all the way to bottom of the lift. It is then pulled out slowly — about one inch per second. If you drag it horizontally or hang around in one spot too long, the aggregate becomes separated from the cement and weakens the concrete. If you aren’t thorough or remove the stinger too fast, the air stays trapped and lowers the concrete’s strength.

You may have read in the news about the buildings in Venezuela that failed after the recent earthquake. Once the concrete was exposed it was full of honeycombing due to poor construction technique and in some places the concrete was filled up with styrofoam to save cost. When the load came, it failed and unfortunately many lives were lost.

David wrote Psalm 51 after his greatest failure. On reflection, he came to realize that God cares about the inward being, not just the smooth, finished surface we show to the rest of the world.

It’s not hard to trowel over our hidden sins, our pride, or our frustrations in order to look strong. Unfortunately those hidden voids weaken our spirit. When the heavy loads of life — stress, tragedy, or conflict — are placed on us, we crack.

God’s Word and His Spirit should shake us up like the stinger does fresh concrete. His word brings the defects out so it they can healed and make us solid through and through.

Do the job today. Build well and let God build the spiritual capacity of your heart.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Don’t Rush the Stinger

The Action: When vibrating a pour, stick strictly to the 1-inch-per-second rule on the way up. Watch the bubbles break on the surface. Resist the need for speed.

The Witness: You show integrity. You are doing the hard, invisible work that no one will see once the concrete cures.

For the Journeyman: Control the Placement

The Action: Ensure the concrete is being placed as close to its final destination as possible. Don’t let your finishing crew use the vibrator to push the concrete horizontally across the form.

The Witness: You model discipline. You plan sufficiently to build the work with integrity.

For the Foreman: Value the Secret Heart of the Job

The Action: During the pre-pour meeting, don’t just talk about yardage and time. Talk about consolidation. Talk to your team about the steps necessary to ensure quality work.

The Witness: You reflect God’s priorities. You lead your crew to value what is on the inside as much as the finished surface.

Prayer

Master Builder, search me today. Show me the hidden voids in my own life — the secret pride, the hidden anger. I want to hold up under pressure. As I do my work today, remind me that following Your plan is what builds true strength. Amen.

“But when Cephas [Peter] came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.” (ESV)

Face to Face

It is one thing to correct an apprentice who doesn’t know any better. It is entirely different to correct the boss.

In this verse, Paul does something terrifying. He confronts Peter — the Rock, the leader of the Apostles, the man who walked on water — because Peter was doing something wrong. Peter was drifting away from the truth of the Gospel, acting out of fear rather than integrity.

Paul didn’t gossip about Peter behind his back. He didn’t wait for a suggestion box. He opposed him face to face.

This is the hardest part of a strong safety culture: Intervention. It is easy to tell a new hire to put their safety glasses on. But what do you do when the Superintendent isn’t doing his part? What do you do when the thirty-year veteran rigger is distracted or cutting a corner?

Most of us stay silent. We avoid the conflict.

Paul shows us that true brotherhood requires the courage to speak up. If you stay silent when a leader or a veteran is unsafe, you are complicit. Stop Work Authority is not just for the easy moments. It is for the hard ones.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: The Question as a Shield

The Action: If a boss is doing something that looks unsafe, ask a question. “Hey boss, does the permit cover us being in here right now?”

The Witness: You show that you are paying attention. You demonstrate a willingness to speak up.

For the Journeyman: Back Up the Apprentice

The Action: If a young worker tries to speak up and gets shut down by someone more senior, step in.

The Witness: You use your influence for to reinforce speaking up. You are bearing the burden of the confrontation so the younger worker doesn’t have to.

For the Foreman: Receive the Correction

The Action: If someone corrects you today, do not snap back. Take a breath. Say, “You’re right. Good catch. Thank you.”

The Witness: You model the humility of Peter, who eventually accepted Paul’s correction. You show that the standard applies to everyone, starting with you.

Prayer

Lord of Truth, give me the courage of Paul. I confess that I frequently don’t speak up. Grant me the boldness to oppose error face to face — not out of anger, but out of love for my team’s safety. Make me a faithful watchman who fears no man more than I fear You. Amen.

Test Before Touch

Lockout/Tagout is one of the most critical procedures on your jobsite. You isolate the energy, throw the breaker or close the valve, and snap your personal lock on the hasp. What if the breaker was mislabeled? What if the valve seat is washed out and fluid is still leaking through? What if there is a parallel feed or a charged capacitor not on the drawings?

The prudent worker performs the most critical part of the LOTO process: Test Before Touch. After the lock is on, they go to the local control station and physically press the Start button to see if the machine kicks on. They take their multimeter, verify it works on a known live source, and then test the locked-out phases.

We absorb the error of a mislabeled breaker by refusing to assume the primary defense worked perfectly.

God warns us through Proverbs that assuming you are safe is the mark of a simple mind. In our spiritual lives, we do this all the time. We assume that because we go to church, or because we pray, our spiritual defenses are locked in place.

Deeper understanding of God’s work in our lives requires us to be prudent. It requires us to Test Before Touch. We must constantly verify our beliefs, our actions, and our hearts against the absolute truth of Scripture.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Demand the Proof

The Action: When a journeyman tells you a circuit is dead and safe to pull, respectfully ask to see them test it with a meter first.

The Witness: You show respect for the hazard. You model prudence by always checking twice.

For the Journeyman: Live-Dead-Live

The Action: Never use a multimeter on a locked-out panel without doing the Live-Dead-Live test. Test the meter on a known live circuit, test the dead panel, then test the live circuit again to ensure the meter is giving you a true reading.

The Witness: You model diligence. You show less experienced workers how to use your equipment correctly and leave nothing to chance.

For the Foreman: Audit the Try Step

The Action: Walk the job. Ask the crew, “Show me how you verified this line was bled down before we break the flange.”

The Witness: You lead with a shepherd’s care. You protect your team from assumptions and complacency by ensuring they are actively looking for the danger.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I often get complacent, assuming that I am safe physically and spiritually without actually checking. Forgive me for taking my defenses for granted. Give me the discipline and prudence today. Help me to know You by constantly testing my life against Your Word. Amen.

I will seek out hidden flaws. I will take the time to grind out the impurities at the deepest level, building the capacity to withstand the pressure tomorrow.

READ 1 CORINTHIANS 3:10, 13

“According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it... Each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.” (ESV)

The Root Pass

When you are joining two pieces of pipe, that first weld bead laid deep into the bevel fuses the two pieces of steel together at the ‘root’. Laying a quality root pass is half the job. Before you can add the hot pass or the cap, the root pass must be cleaned. You do it with a grinder grinder or wire wheel and aggressively chase out slag, silica, and any impurity left behind. It is tedious, hot, and time-consuming work. The temptation is always there to rush it — to leave a little bit of slag in the wagon tracks and just weld over it.

If you miss a bit and weld over slag, you create an inclusion; a microscopic void in the joint. You can put a perfect cap over it and it will look flawless to the naked eye. But the structural capacity of the pipe is diminished. When the line is pressurized, that hidden void will become a source of failure.

Paul warns us to take care how we build because eventually, the work will be tested. God acts like the X-ray on our welds. He sees right through the pretty cap we put on the outside.

We frequently build over our own slag. We cover up our pride, our anger, or our bad habits with a good outward appearance. But a strong relationship with the Master Builder is forged only when we stop covering up the voids and start dealing with them.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Do Not Hide the Slag

The Action: If you are prepping a joint or cleaning a weld, do not stop until you see shiny metal. If your grinder slips and you gouge the bevel, do not hide it.

The Witness: Though the work is hard and tedious, you demonstrate integrity. Your work is critical to having a good weld.

For the Journeyman: Take Care How You Build

The Action: Do not let time pressure or inattention push you to strike an arc over a dirty root. Stop. Clean it.

The Witness: That weld will have your name on it. Take pride in your yourself and demonstrate how quality work gets done.

For the Foreman: Value the Test

The Action: When a welder busts an X-ray, use it as an opportunity to review their prep process. Remind the crew that the goal is to build a system that won’t fail.

The Witness: Be thankful the flaw was caught and you have the opportunity to get it right. Work on the basics of weld cleanliness to start from a strong root.

Prayer

Lord, You see past the surface and test the deepest parts of my work and my heart. Forgive me for the times I have tried to cover up my mistakes or hide my sins just to keep moving. Give me the discipline to clean out the impurities in my life today. Build me to handle the pressure. Amen.

I will team up to stay safe. Two are better than one.

READ ECCLESIASTES 4:9-10

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!” (ESV)

Working Better Together

Working alone is one of the highest-risk activities we can do. If you are in a trench, in a confined space, or up in a lift by yourself, you are working without a primary layer of defense: redundancy.

Human error is inevitable. You will eventually miss a step, misread a gauge, or lose your footing. If you are alone when that happens, the error becomes an accident. If you have a partner — a buddy — that error is avoided. It becomes a near-miss or learning moment.

Ecclesiastes puts it bluntly: “Woe to him who is alone when he falls.” This isn’t solely spiritual advice; it is operational reality. A second set of eyes sees the hazard you missed. A second pair of hands holds the ladder. A second voice calls out “Stop!” when you are about to cut the wrong wire.

God created us for community, and He designed work to be a shared burden. The good reward the scripture promises is the paycheck and the safety that comes from mutual protection. Don’t isolate yourself. The strongest builder is the one who refuses to work alone.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Stick to Your Partner

The Action: Never wander off. If you are assigned to help a journeyman, stay within earshot and eyesight. Communicate.

The Witness: You demonstrate that you are present and engaged.

For the Journeyman: Invite the Check

The Action: Before you flip a switch or make a cut, ask your partner, “Do you see anything I missed?”

The Witness: You model humility. You show that you value getting it right. You are making room to manage error.

For the Foreman: Eliminate Lone Work

The Action: Review your assignment sheet. Do you have anyone working in isolation? Make sure everyone is paired up and in teams for today’s task.

The Witness: You reflect God’s wisdom. You build up your team to get the work done safely.

Prayer

Lord, protect me from the pride that says I don’t need help. Thank You for the brothers and sisters working alongside me. Give me the humility to value their presence and the wisdom to watch their backs. Let us be a shield for one another against the hazards of this day. Amen.

“He who digs a pit will fall into it, and a serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall.” (NKJV)

The Hedge Breaker

In the ancient world, stone walls and hedges were used to mark boundaries. Snakes loved to nest in the gaps. If a man was careless or impatient and tried to break through the wall to take a shortcut, he risked disturbing the serpent hiding inside.

The spiritual lesson is clear: when you break God’s boundaries, you invite destruction. The workplace lesson is just as true.

We have hedges everywhere — Machine Guards, Barricades, and other physical controls.

Why do we break them? Usually for the same reason the man in the proverb did. We want a short way around.

When you remove a safety control, you are breaking the hedge. You might save five minutes, but you are exposing yourself and your team to the serpent — the spinning blade, the live wire, the dropped object.

The bite of the serpent is fast and unforgiving. The wall is not there to annoy you; it is there to separate you from the snake. Respect the barriers put in place to keep you safe.

For the Laborer and Apprentice: Don’t Touch It

The Action: If you see a machine with the guard missing or a panel open, do not use it. Get it out of service immediately.

The Witness: You don’t walk past a problem and leave it to someone else. You model care and respect.

For the Journeyman: Check and Double Check

The Action: Before you start your work, check the barricades and safeguards. Are they poorly located for the task? Are they sufficient?

The Heavy Lift

Accidents happen when the demands of the task — the weight, the complexity, the rush — exceed the capacity of the worker — their strength, their focus, their tools. When Paul tells us to bear one another’s burdens, he is giving us a divine instruction for increasing capacity. When you see a co-worker struggling and you step in to help, you are instantly changing the equation. You are adding strength to the system. You are turning a one-man risk into a two-man defense.

Fulfilling the law of Christ on a job site doesn’t require words. Sometimes, the holiest thing you can do is put your hand on the other end of a heavy pipe. By refusing to let your brother or sister struggle alone, you prevent the fatigue that leads to error and the frustration that leads to shortcuts.

God did not design us to carry the weight of the world — or the weight of the work — by ourselves. We are built for connection. Today, keep your head on a swivel. Look for the person who is struggling under the load and be the one who lightens it.

The Star Pattern

When you are making up a flanged joint, the way you tighten the bolts is just as important as the bolts themselves.

If you take torque the bolts in a circle — tightening one all the way down before moving to the one next to it — the flange will fail. Tightening in a circle pinches one side of the gasket while leaving the opposite side loose. It creates a hidden vulnerability. When that line is pressurized with steam, chemical, or water, the uneven gasket will blow out.

To deliver the full capacity of the flange and gasket, you use the star pattern. You tighten one bolt, then cross all the way over to the opposite side. You go back and forth in a crisscross pattern, bringing the two heavy flanges together evenly, step by step, torque setting by torque setting. Maybe it takes just a little more time. It requires moving around, sometimes with a heavy torque wrench or impact gun. But it is the only way to apply a just weight and an even balance to the joint.

God tells us that He delights in a just weight and a true balance. This is about our work, our economics and how we build our lives. We sometimes rush through life in a circle — applying massive pressure to one area like our careers — while leaving our spiritual lives, our families, or our character loose. When the high pressure of life hits us, we blow a gasket.

Building a life of depth and integrity requires the discipline of balance. Don’t rush the pattern. Apply the right amount of attention to the right areas, trusting that God’s balanced way is the way to build a life that holds up under pressure.

The Action: When learning to make up a flange or torque a critical piece of equipment, use a soapstone or paint pen to literally number the bolts in the crisscross sequence before you pick up the wrench.

The Witness: You show prudence. You take the time to lay out the pattern and avoid failure. You set the standard.

For the Journeyman: Do Not Chase the Leak

The Action: If a flanged joint fails a hydro-test and starts to drip, do not grab a cheater bar and over-torque the one bolt nearest the leak. Depressurize, loosen the bolts, check the gasket, and bring the whole pattern up evenly again.

The Witness: You model self-control. You demonstrate that you will not let frustration force you into a dangerous, unbalanced shortcut.

For the Foreman: Audit the Balance

The Action: Look at how you are managing your crew. Are you applying all the pressure to your best workers while letting underperformers stay loose? Spread the load.

The Witness: You reflect God’s justice. You manage with a just weight, ensuring fairness and balance across the entire team.

Lord of Truth, You delight in balance and honesty. Forgive me for the times I have rushed the process, applying all my energy to one part of my life while completely ignoring the others. The Full Armor

When Paul wrote this letter, he was likely looking at a Roman soldier. He saw a man covered from head to toe in metal and leather, designed for one purpose: to survive the strike of the enemy.

Paul uses this image to teach us about spiritual warfare. The principle applies perfectly to our work. You cannot fight a war in your pajamas, and you cannot build a skyscraper in shorts and flip-flops.

Our Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is our armor. The Helmet of Salvation protects the mind; the Hard Hat protects the brain. The Breastplate of Righteousness protects the heart; the High-Vis Vest ensures we are seen. The Shield of Faith extinguishes arrows; Safety Glasses deflect debris. The Shoes of Peace provide stability; Steel-Toed Boots provide traction and protection.

We complain about our armor. “It’s too hot.” “These glasses fog up.” “These gloves reduce my dexterity.” But the hazard — whether it is a spiritual attack or a flying shard of metal — does not care about your comfort.

The whole armor means you don’t pick and choose. You don’t wear the helmet but leave the breastplate at home. A soldier with a shield but no shoes will fall.

God values your life. He has provided spiritual defenses for your soul and gave us the wisdom to create physical defenses for your body. Respect the temple He created and suit up.

Work as Imagined vs. Work as Done

There is often a gap between the office and the job site. It is the difference between Work as Imagined — how the planners and engineers think the job will go — and Work as Done — how it actually happens in the mud, rain, and tight spaces.

Proverbs tells us that giving an answer before hearing the whole story is foolish. Yet how often do we see a safety plan or new policy roll out that makes no sense for the team turning the wrenches?

A foundational goal of Human and Organizational Performance is to build capacity for safe work. We don’t punish failure; we build a system strong enough to fail safely. You cannot build capacity on a job site if you don’t understand the reality of what your team is facing. You have to ask: What makes this job difficult? Why did that shortcut make sense at the time?

This same principle applies to our spiritual lives. Building capacity to understand God’s work in our lives is the key to a closer relationship with Him. We rush to God with our own answers — telling Him exactly how He should fix our problems, our finances, or our families. We do all the talking. We fail to listen.

To build spiritual capacity, we must stop and hear what God is doing in our reality. We must listen to His Word and His Spirit before we assume we know the plan. Whether you are leading a crew or following the Lord, listening is the foundation of building capacity that lasts.

The Action: Do not write a Job Safety Analysis or work plan from the trailer. Go walk the ground where the work will happen with the people who will be doing the work.

The Witness: You show humility. You acknowledge that the people with the boots on the ground often see things the clipboard misses.

Father, forgive me for the times I have spoken too quickly and listened too little. I want to build a greater capacity to understand Your work in my life, but I know that requires me to be quiet and hear Your voice. Give me the patience to understand the reality of the work before I judge it or try to fix it. Make me a leader and a follower who listens first. Amen.

My Yes Can Be Trusted

Ambiguity is a killer. “I think so,” and “pretty much” are dangerous phrases. When we are dealing with high voltage, pressurized lines, or suspended loads, we don’t have the luxury of guessing.

Jesus’ command to let our Yes be Yes is often taught as a lesson against lying or swearing oaths. But on the job site, it is the foundation of Operational Discipline. It means that our words must match reality.

We talk about Critical Steps — those moments where, if you get it wrong, there is no recovery. A Lockout/Tagout verification is a critical step. When a mechanic asks, “Is that breaker locked out?” and you answer “Yes,” you are issuing a guarantee that lives depend on. If you say “Yes” because you assume it’s done, or because you don’t want to look slow, you are introducing a failure into the system.

The Evil One, as the verse says, thrives in confusion and half-truths. A job site that runs on God’s principles runs on clarity. A No is just as valuable as a Yes. Saying “No, I haven’t checked that yet” or “No, I don’t understand the plan” requires courage, but it stops the job long enough to make it safe.

Strip the maybe out of your vocabulary. If you haven’t put your eyes on it, the answer is “I don’t know — let’s go look.” Let your communication be as solid as the concrete you pour.

“When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet (guardrail) for your roof, that you may not bring the guilt of blood upon your house, if anyone should fall from it.” (ESV)

Building the Parapet

This verse from Deuteronomy is the world’s first Building Code.

In ancient Israel, roofs were flat. People used them as living spaces in the cool of the evening. Because people were up there constantly, the risk of falling was high. God didn’t say, “Be careful.” God commanded a Parapet — a physical wall or guardrail.

We use the Hierarchy of Controls to keep our work safe. At the bottom is Behavior — telling people to watch out. At the top is Design — creating the capacity to fail safely by physically removing or mitigating the hazard. God is the great designer. He knows that human beings trip, get dizzy, and get distracted. He knows that gravity is undefeated. He demands a physical solution to a fatal hazard.

If you are working near a leading edge, a hole, or a trench, you cannot rely on your balance to save you. You need a parapet — a guardrail, a hole cover, or a fall protection system.

God takes safety personally. He views the failure to provide protection as a moral failure.

Don’t trust your agility. Build guardrails.

Lord, You value our lives so much that You gave us instructions on how to build our roofs. Forgive me for the times I have skipped placing safety barriers because it was too much work. Help me to see that a guardrail is an act of love for my neighbor. Give me the diligence to build the parapet for the benefit of myself and others. Amen.

The 360 Walk-Around

Before a veteran moves a machine, they walk all the way around it. They look under the tracks, check for leaks, and see where the blind spots are. They see the danger before they turn the key.

Proverbs 27:12 is the biblical definition of Hazard Recognition. The prudent worker is not psychic; they are observant. They are constantly scanning the future. They ask, “If a hose blows, where does the fluid go? If this load shifts, where does it fall?” Anticipation is the key to failing safely or avoiding failure altogether.

The simple worker operates on hope. They assume the site is the same as it was an hour ago. They walk past the warning tape without looking up. They go on blindly, and the verse promises a grim result.

Prudence is the discipline of pausing to look. It is the 30-second scan that saves you regret. Don’t rely on luck. Open your eyes, see the risk, be the prudent one.

Open My Eyes

On a construction site, what you don’t see can kill you. In this story, Elisha’s servant walks out in the morning and sees only one thing: the enemy army surrounding them. He panics. He sees the threat, but he is blind to the reality of the situation. Elisha sees the full picture. He prays a simple, powerful prayer: “Lord, open his eyes.”

We talk about Hazard Recognition — the ability to look at a work area and see what others miss. A blind worker sees a crane making a lift; a teammate with open eyes sees the swing radius, the pinch point, and the load path.

We often operate like the servant — focused on the pressure of the job and blind to the invisible energies around us like gravity, electricity, or pressure.

We need to pray Elisha’s prayer every morning before we step out of the truck: “Lord, open my eyes.” Help me see the hazards. Help me see the defenses that You have provided.

God gave us the gift of sight, use it. Don’t walk through your day with tunnel vision. Stop, look up, look down, and ask God to show you the reality of where you are standing.

The Silent Enemy

Peter warns us that the enemy doesn’t announce himself. He prowls. The hazards he creates for us are the same.

Our greatest enemy isn’t the complex, high-risk task like a heavy lift that has everyone’s attention. It is complacency. It is the silent confidence that says, “I’ve done this a thousand times. I don’t need the checklist. I don’t need to tie off for just five steps.”

As we get better at our jobs, our brains drift into autopilot. We stop seeing the risk because we are used to it. That moment of drift is when the lion strikes.

The command to be sober-minded isn’t about drugs or alcohol (though that works too). It means to be serious and clear-headed. It means waking up from the daydream of the routine. It means respecting the voltage, the pressure, and the gravity every single time, as if it’s the first time you are touching it.

The devil loves distraction. He loves a crew that has lost its fear of the hazards. Today, treat your environment with the respect a lion deserves. Stay alert. Watch the shadows. Don’t let the routine lull you into the mouth of the beast.
